AFX DANCE COMPANY

AFX Dance Company (aka AFX Comp) is the competitive/advanced team under AFX Dance. While we mainly practice open-style choreography, we also aim to expose dancers to various dance forms and fundamentals drills by bringing in well-versed guest instructors to share their experiences and knowledge. This learning process is continued through conversations about the history and culture behind these dance forms, as well as through community discussions with other organizations about implementing Hip-Hop education and creating a comfortable space for all dancers. Our team also practices freestyle exercises to allow dancers to explore their own movement. As AFX Comp, we represent AFX Dance and the UC Berkeley community in various dance competitions across California and create and release video projects, sharing our work and knowledge with the world. We hope to foster a tight-knit family environment, emphasizing the values of unity, shared purpose, and accountability.

How the Team Works

AFX Dance Company is a year-long commitment. Auditions are held at the beginning of the fall semester, consisting of teach nights and a separate audition date. The process consists of both an audition piece and interview. Acceptance onto the team in the fall will require commitment for the spring as well. Mid-year auditions are also held at the beginning of the spring semester. Practices typically are 3 times a week for 3 hours each, but extra time is required for community events, team bonding activities, and competition days. Extra or extended practices are sometimes necessary.
