MAIN STACKS DANCE TEAM

Founded in 2008 by Vivian Peng and May Matsuo, Main Stacks is a competitive dance team that uses dance as a medium for developing its members and its community. As a family, we seek to continue creating an environment of inclusivity through our pillars of Growth, Humility, and Community. Main Stacks focuses on providing opportunities for personal Growth through education, dance training, competition, and social action. We aim to be a family that supports our diverse dancers and alumni under a unified love and passion for dance. True growth and inclusivity is unattainable without Humility. For us, that means understanding our place as guests in the house of hip-hop, learning its history, and respecting Black culture. We take pride in what we do, while embodying the “student for life” mindset. Through sharing our knowledge and resources, we aim to foster relationships between dancers and teams in order to uplift the Community. As the proud host of Prelude Norcal Dance Competition, Main Stacks strives to push the envelope and build connections both internally and externally. Main Stacks is committed to upholding these values as we dance to grow, dance to build.

The Stacks family holds a special place in the hearts of those who’ve experienced it, and every year at Prelude Norcal, our alumni network, which reaches into teams such as GRV, The Company, CSLA, and Syndicate, collaborates from across the nation to showcase their talents and pay tribute to the team they grew up with. As we always aspire to give back to the community, we also provide visiting dancers in the summer an opportunity to experience our passion and growth through an 8-week dance intensive hosted at UC Berkeley, known as Summer Stacks. We are a team that is by the community, for the community - and we strive to create crafts that showcase the talent and the love that we have for dance.

Main Stacks has also competed across the state and has placed in the following competitions: - Prelude Norcal 2008 : 3rd Place - Maxt Out 2009 : 2nd Place - Breakthrough 2010 : 1st Place - Collaboration 2011 : 1st Place - Breakthrough 2011 : 2nd Place - Battlefest 360 2011 : 1st Place - Breakthrough 2012 : 1st Place - Battlefest 2012 : 1st Place - Ultimate Brawl 2012 : Tied 3rd Place - Complex 2015 : 3rd Place (Summer Stacks) - Battleground 360 2015: 1st Place - Complex 2017: 2nd Place (Summer Stacks) - Breakthrough 2018: 1st Place - Complex 2018: 2nd Place (Summer Stacks) - Bridge NorCal 2019: 3rd Place - Complex 2019: 1st Place (Summer Stacks)

How the Team Works

Auditions for Main Stacks are held once near the beginning of every semester. Generally, auditionees will have to learn 2 pieces, block formations for these pieces in teams of 3-4 other dancers, and choreograph to a third song with the same team. These teams are the same teams that the auditionees will be auditioning with during audition day.

During a normal competitive season, Main Stacks practices 3 times a week for 3 hours each practice, though practices may be extended near the competitive season. Dancers will learn challenging choreography, grow physically and mentally as a dancer, and learn how to be better performers on stage. Dancers will also get the opportunity to learn from Main Stacks alumni and other instructors to brush up on fundamentals and train.
